Juan Gonzalez is trying a comeback with the St. Louis Cardinals.
After sitting out the past two seasons, the two-time AL MVP will be one of 26 non-roster players invited to St. Louis' spring training camp this month.
The 38-year-old Gonzalez last played regularly in 2003 when he had 24 home runs and 70 RBIs in 324 at-bats for the Texas Rangers. He had one at-bat with Cleveland in 2005 before injuring his hamstring.
Gonzalez has 434 career homers and five 40-homer seasons, the last in 1998.
Cardinals star Albert Pujols has been working out with Gonzalez, and pushed for the team to give him a shot.www.ksdk.com/sports/sports_article.aspx?storyid=139668

Juan Gone??? We get rid of one 38 year old outfielder (a 9 time GG winner, to boot) and we go after a 38 year old outfielder who hasn't played in almost 3 years and who hasn't had a decent season since 1998?
What the H*LL is DeWitt smoking?

I'm weary of this move. Obviously if Albert wants him invited it's ok to oblige, but this guy can turn into a cancer real quick.
What happens if he makes the roster, but ends up being a backup? He'll want to play everyday, and riding the pine will upset him and could be devistating to a lineup that has enough troubles.
I don't know, we give up Edmonds for nobody because he's a 37 year old center fielder with injury problems.
Juan Gonzalez is a 38 year old right fielder with injury problems that hasn't played in 2 years!!

yanno, the whole idea of getting the new stadium was so the Cardinals could be competitive... How many quality free-agents have slipped through our fingers while we go after guys who haven't played in over a year? Nothing against Matt Clement, but if we're gonna spend money, go after somebody who can be an impact right away... I don't know if the powers that be are not wanting to send messages to Carp and Mulder, but those guys can't help us this year... Not a bit... I think the Cards' management really fell down this off season...
But, I'm hoping to be greatly surprised.

I think it's because he wasn't named in the Mitchell report. Cause if he was, he'd have a contract
