In an audio break, Kramer mentioned that the StL Rams had moved their practices indoor due to the extreme heat conditions. Somewhat true. During two-a-days, the evening session is almost always held outdoors. In the morning practice, the majority of defensive players are still at it outdoors hitting the skids and each other. The offense remains indoors.
He then belly-ached that players making millions should be able to handle a little heat. True. And they do. Even an indoor practice facility or bubble still remains in the 85+ temperature range though.
Another factor to consider is how many pre-season vs. regular season games will be played in a dome vs. open air. In the Rams case, their first pre-season game is in the Metrodome in Minnesota tomorrow night. (08/10/07) The three remaining pre-season are outdoor games. Ten of the sixteen regular season games will be played in domed stadiums. So each team's schedule must be taken into account and to what need they need to be acclamated to.
You simply can not compare a football team and all their trappings to other sports and heat. Sure, the baseball Cards play in this heat---but how much physical output does each player exert per inning? They then retreat to a cooled dug-out between innings and sneak into the club house for some AC. As for hockey and cold...puh..leeeze.
Also, the decision to move in-doors benefits a larger number of people than players---from fans (if allowed), coaching staff, trainers, reporters, etc. Not to mention the medical staff. A lot less IV's are used for rehydration between practices. Sometimes no poke is better than repeated pokings.
