Four-time Pro Bowl selection Isaac Bruce agreed to a two-year, $6 million contract Friday as the 49ers took another chance on an aging star receiver from an NFC West rival. Even at age 35, Bruce had a better 2007 than any of the 49ers' receivers. He had 55 catches for 733 yards. The 49ers' top receiver, Arnaz Battle, had 50 catches for 600 yards. The contract agreement came a day after the Rams released the three-time All-Pro to avoid paying him a $2 million roster bonus; the team tried unsuccessfully to restructure the deal. www.mercurynews.com/sabercats/ci_8418100Jerry Rice, often referred to as the "greatest wide receiver to play the game," and sometimes the "greatest football player ever," is amongst the most iconic athletes in sports, let alone NFL history. Despite this legendary status his #80 jersey for the San Francisco 49ers is shockingly not retired. And now the recently signed Isaac Bruce, who himself wore the #80 throughout his 14 year tenure as a Ram, and also ranks among the greatest WRs of all time (#3 on the all time yardage list) is considering wearing Jerry's jersey, and Rice has given his blessing. Bruce, who originally chose the number out of respect for Rice, and who is an equally classy guy himself will probably opt for an alternative. I'm sure 95% of San Francisco fans are hoping he does the right thing. sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2008/03/10/does-isaac-bruce-dare-to-wear-jerry-rices-no-80/?ncid=NWS00010000000001

I agree with Reno. Isaac is way too classy to cause a big stink like that.
The real problem here is the 49ers. #80 should have already been retired; if not for Rice's accomplishments then for the sentiment of the fans.

It can't be retired while he is still active.

His consecutive-game streak of making a reception ended in September 2004 at a mind-boggling 274. A month later he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks, for whom he played nine games and caught 25 passes, including the last three touchdown receptions of his career (boosting his total to 197). The Denver Broncos brought him to training camp in 2005, but not interested in a limited role, Rice retired after the team's final exhibition game.espn.go.com/classic/biography/s/Rice_Jerry.html
